Seven Sweet Suet Shots

Suet cakes are sold in so many different stores. At some farm supply stores you can get them in 12-packs for less than a dollar each. Add a couple bucks for an inexpensive suet cake holder and you're in business. Woodpeckers aren't the only birds that are attracted to the suet's quick & easy source of energy.

(And if you're more of a DIY-type of person, you can make your own in the kitchen.)

Here's a video of how to do it!

The first two birds below are not the same kind of woodpecker. Do you know which is which?

Up Close & Personal

I decided to place a camera under a fallen tree and things were going fine until some critter knocked the camera over. Here are a few photos snapped before that happened. (Note: The time and day of the month are correct, but the month should be December.)

Upstream from Amy's Crossing

You'll have to ignore the dates on these photos. They were actually snapped in the last 10 days. I'd left a camera in a spot that resembled the watering hole/crossing Amy found last year. My spot is clearly not as good but I do have a few pics to share with you.

First up, a big blurry bird in the middle of the night. I'm assuming it's an owl but am open to suggestion.

Only one buck showed up. Looks like he may have already have done some fighting. (Note the broken tine.)

This may be a doe and her fawn. I know there's a pair hanging out in the general area.

And finally, 2 days ago these turkeys stopped by for about an hour. There were several photos of them - these 2 are the best.

Special Edition: More From Amy's Crossing

While my cameras have been snapping hundreds of photos of squirrels and rabbits, Tim and Amy's cam down by the creek, left unchecked for a couple of months, has caught some spectacular photos. Big thanks to Amy for sharing these!

First up, coyotes stop by day and night. Don't think my cameras have EVER caught one during the day.

Take a look at those vultures - wow!

So now it seems there are both stray cats AND dogs passing through the property.

And then there are the magnificent bucks, both at night...

...and during the day!

Sad to see the growth near this guy's eye.

And finally, a couple of turkeys stop by for a drink of water.

One other note: The camera caught a clear image of a trespasser walking the creek. Luckily, he didn't see the camera or he would have taken it. I had one taken a few years ago from the same creek, though I had left it in plain view. Amy's cam was not nearly as obvious ;)

The title of today's post? The number of photos one of my cameras took in just 3 days. I had chosen a new spot along the path and wasn't expecting much other than squirrels. Yes, probably three hundred of the pics ARE of squirrels, but there was actually more variety than I expected.
